At Tilghman Orthodontics, our doctors and staff are committed to providing you and your family with friendly, customized orthodontic care. We realize that the holiday season is one of the most treasured times of the year and brings some of your favorite things, like crisp weather, family gatherings, and seasonal food. However, we also know that holiday dinners and an overabundance of sweets can also increase your risk of tooth decay. We want to help patients navigate this time of the year and offer some tips on foods to avoid during this holiday season, especially for those with clear aligners like Invisalign and SmilesCorrect.

What Foods Are Off Limits?

Sweets and other temptations are common this time of year, but foods with high levels of sugar can contribute to dental problems and worsen common orthodontic problems. It is important to always use caution with hard or tough foods—but there are certain foods that can be even more damaging when it comes to traditional braces. We recommend avoiding anything sticky (gum, candy), hard (ice, nuts, corn, apples, bagels, chips), overly sugary (cake, ice cream, cookies, pie, candy, soda), or large pieces of food that are difficult to chew and break down. One of the greatest advantages of clear aligners such as Invisalign and SmilesCorrect is there are no dietary restrictions. Unlike traditional braces and orthodontic appliances, clear aligners are removable and don’t get in the way when you eat and drink. However, we still recommend avoiding overly sugary foods and maintaining a diet high in fiber-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables.

How to Maintain Oral Hygiene?

When it comes to clear aligners, it is also important to remember to keep up with regular brushing and flossing on a daily basis to maintain excellent oral health. Keep your mouth clean after meals by brushing and flossing frequently before putting your aligners back in. If you are diligent about cleaning your aligners regularly, it will also avoid bacteria build up.

  • Brush twice per day, with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, for at least two minutes
  • Floss at least once per day, preferably after every meal
  • Schedule routine dental exam/cleanings (6 months), and keep up with regular orthodontic visits

If you follow these easy tips, you’ll be able to maintain excellent oral health during the holiday season.
