Am I Too Old For Braces?

Ever wondered if you were too old for braces? You’re not alone. Once people have reached a certain age, they think that it’s too late to get corrective orthodontic treatment. Well, here at Tilghman Orthodontics, we think you’re never too old and it’s never too late to get braces! Keep in mind that straightening your teeth is not always for aesthetic reasons. Many adults need additional space to accommodate a bridge, crown or implant. Correcting the alignment of your teeth will improve your overall oral health, avoid future oral disease or infection, and help certain teeth avoid overuse and keep them from wearing and tearing more than others.

What Kind Of Brace Can I Get?

Fortunately, in this day and age, there are many available options depending on what you’re looking to accomplish. The most popular types of braces include traditional steel braces, ceramic braces, and lingual braces. These appliances are very similar in that they include brackets that are strung together with orthodontic wire which pull/push teeth into place. The main difference lies in their visibility.

Traditional steel braces are the braces that are the most recognized and familiar; they are metal brackets that are stuck on the surface of your teeth and have a metal wire running through them. Ceramic braces, on the other hand, are modeled after the design of traditional braces except for one thing: the ceramic material. Porcelain brackets are made to be clear or tooth-colored so that when someone is sporting them, other people won’t immediately notice that the person is wearing braces. Finally, lingual braces. They are the most discreet type of braces as they are exactly like traditional braces except for their positioning—they’ll actually be placed on the inside part of your teeth instead of the outer surface.

Alternative to Braces

If braces are not your thing, but you’re still looking for straighter teeth, our doctors offer ant alternative: clear aligners! Most people have heard of Invisalign; however, we are proud to offer our own aligner system - Smiles Correct! This Invisalign and braces alternative is a treatment comprised of custom made clear aligners that will act like retainers and nudge your teeth into place. It is a less expensive substitute than Invisalign and will help you reach your results more quickly.
