Our patients are like family, as we support them inside and outside of the office with our EmBrace Life program.

Your journey at Tilghman Orthodontics starts with your first consultation appointment, and you’ll find out what to expect below.

What To Expect At Your First Appointment

When you first walk through the door, you'll be greeted by one of our patient coordinators or receptionists, who will provide you with the patient forms. For your convenience, you can also find our Patient Forms online, and can complete them before visiting our Salisbury or Berlin office. Once that's completed, you’ll be guided into one of our diagnostic exam areas.

During your exam, Dr. Tilghman or Dr. Schwartz will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, mouth, and gums to determine if any orthodontic issues are present or likely to develop. In addition to a physical exam, we'll also likely take pictures, x-rays, and impressions (physical models of your teeth) to complete our initial diagnosis and create a treatment plan.

What We'll Discuss

Ultimately, your first appointment is about learning – and we'll go over everything we find with you in detail. We want you for fully understand your orthodontic situation and options, so we encourage you to ask any questions you may have during the appointment. We’ll review the following points:

  • Do I need orthodontic treatment? Does my child need orthodontic treatment?
  • What treatment options are available to me?
  • Is now the best time to start treatment, or should we wait?
  • Will I need to have a tooth extracted?
  • What will treatment cost? What are my financial options?
  • How long will treatment take?

Early Orthodontic Treatment

We ask parents to bring their children in for an initial evaluation around age 7. At this age, the back bite is developed, which helps us identify any issues that require early intervention. In most cases, we'll simply wait and monitor your child's development until the ideal time to begin treatment – but sometimes, it's best to start treatment right away. In those cases, early orthodontic treatment is critical for helping your child achieve a healthy, beautiful smile in the long-term as effectively and conveniently as possible.
